WORKSHOPS

The Emerging Nurse Leader Workshop provides for nurses who aspire to become formal and informal nurse leaders.

The day will end with opportunities for participants to identify, and on-site network with, a mentor from FONL membership.

SCHOLARSHIPS

FONL is offering the 2024 Norway Aspiring Nurse Leader Scholarship. This educational scholarship will be presented to two nurses who are actively pursuing a graduate degree in Nursing Leadership or Health Care Administration.

Scholarships will be awarded in March 2025

Leading During a Crisis

Are you leading through the crisis…or Managing the response?

Now more than ever, your leadership abilities are shining through. The times that we are faced with as a Nation and beyond are pressing in and we must be able to lead our teams. To help you, the FONL has pulled together a variety of articles and resources to support you in caring for yourself as well as practical insight to leading with integrity during these challenging times.

Replete with both complexity and change, crises require executives to both lead and manage effectively. But more often than not, leaders tend to focus their efforts on management, rather than leadership. The most effective leaders in crises ensure that someone else is managing the present well while focusing their attention on leading beyond the crisis toward a more promising future. The authors identify four traps that most leaders fall into: 1) taking a narrow view; 2) getting seduced by managing; 3) over-centralizing the response; and 4) forgetting the human factor.

5 tips for communicating with employees during a crisis

To understand how leaders can communicate effectively during a crisis like the current one, the authors sent a 12-question assessment to employees in 10 for-profit, not-for-profit, and government organizations. Based on the 830 responses they received, they found five practices drive employee satisfaction with the organization’s overall interactions with them during the Covid-19 crisis. They include: communicate frequently, provide safe channels for giving feedback, help employees work at home effectively, address concerns about job security, and provide a plan for the future. GOALS OF THE MENTORING PROGRAM

  • Develop the next generation of Nurse Leaders
  • Facilitate networking and connections among members
  • Provide a mentor for new nurse leaders who would like a mentor
  • Leverage the expertise and experience of the large membership
  • Support succession planning of leadership roles

PARTICIPANTS AND MATCHING

The participants express interest by filling out an online application. The program coordinators match the mentors with several things in mind:

Current role or aspiring to leadership.

Mentors had some experience that the person doing the matching thought was relevant. Example: A mentor who currently works in the Wilmington, may have been matched with someone in a lower Oslo location. The mentor may have had previous experience in a like setting. Type of interest; advanced education; role in practice or education, or other stated interests.

Potential for ease of access. Please note most mentors are from the Oslo area. In some cases matches are made within a larger healthcare organization, in some cases not.

GOAL SETTING

Mutual goals should be set and agreed upon to help the mentor and mentee focus their time together and to help measure success.
